Origin Piece

The origin piece that inspired this semester's experiments was an essay I wrote my senior year of high school for the LSA Honors program here at UM. The essay dealt with the theme of surveillance capitalism, though at the time I didn't know the term for what I was describing. Jumping off thematically from that original essay, I experimented in writing a podcast script and a creative nonfiction essay discussing/addressing surveillance capitalism.

Experiment Two

For my second experiment I wrote in the genre of creative nonfiction, telling a true story of a private moment of playing around on a guitar and enjoying the rediscovery of playing music, only to find that there was nothing private about the experience.

Experiment One

My first experiment was writing a script for a podcast about surveillance capitalism, which was essentially intended as a guide to understanding the current discourse with reference to the historical development of advertising, data collection, and privacy rights.

Pitch Deck

My project pitch is for a series of creative nonfiction essays entitled 'Understanding 2024' wherein I try to make sense of the 2024 election and our swiftly changing world using stories and experiences from my life and from other people's lives, framed against the background of surveillance capitalism and the influence of data.
